Residential Package Units

- There are two basic types of Residential Air Conditioning equipment.
The most common is the split system consisting of an outdoor
condenser, an indoor evaporator coil, a gas or electric furnace, a
duct work system and refrigeration piping and wiring connecting
them. A Package Unit has all of these components together in one
cabinet and it is located outside of the home on the ground or on the
roof with supply and return ductwork connecting it to the inside of the
house.
- Package Units come in Heat Pump as well as normal cooling and
heating configurations. Generally, heating is by natural gas but
electric resistance heat and heat pump systems are readily available.
- Outdoor Package Units are versatile and can be used where space,
location, or unusual circumstances of the construction of the home
are present. They are commonly used in the manufactured housing
industry where their ease of application to the home is preferred
especially in rural areas.
- Package AC Units are now available in high and ultra high efficiency
systems (13 seer or higher) just like split system Air Conditioning
systems. They also are available with the new R-410a
environmentally friendly refrigerant.
- Most residential and rural homes only have single phase power in
their electrical service and Residential Package units are made to run
off of this type of power application.
